Glycyrrhizin glabra which is known as licorice is a traditional herbal medicine for many diseases. We mentioned the effects of this herb to lose weight in our “does licorice help to lose weight?” article.
Some conducted researches shows that licorice is effective in losing weight and burning fat. However there is a fact that the supplement pills containing the Glycyrrhizin -the active substance of licorice- can cause a variety of serious side effects including high blood pressure when it is used in high doses for long times.
In a study conducted and performed by Medical and Surgical Sciences – Department of Endocrinology of University of Padua in Italy in and published in July 2003 Issue of Endocrine Research
Journal; the effects of licorice were assessed on 15 participants that have normal weight. These participants consumed 3,5 grams of licorice per day for two months. At the end of the experiment it is observed the body mass index of the participants did not change however their body fat mass have decreased.
In a study conducted by Medical and Surgical Sciences – Department of Endocrinology of University of Padua which published in July 2005 the licorice cream’s effect to fat thickness assessed after a cream containing glycyrrhetinic acid which is obtained from licorice applied.
The experiment conducted on 18 women and some of these women applied a cream that contains 2,5% glycyrrhetinic acid licorice and rest of them applied placebo cream which is a dysfunctional substance to their hip every day. At the end of the experiment a significant reduction was detected in the hips of women who applied licorice cream. Scientists concluded that the glycyrrhetinic acid can be effective to reduce the regional adiposity based on these research results.
Effects to Obesity
In a study carried out on animals by Functional Food Ingredients Department of Kaneka Corporation and published in Bioscience, Biotechnology and Biochemistry Journal in January 2007; the effects of licorice flavonoid fat investigated on obese mice. It has been found that licorice prevents the increase in obesity and reduces the fats when the mice experienced these fats are compared with other rat group.
It Prevents Sweet Carving and Reduces Glucose in Blood
One of the common problems that people who want to lose weight encounter is the sweet carving they experience. Chewing a licorice regulate the blood sugar and thus, fight against hunger caused by the fluctuations in blood glucose.
In a study carried out by Kaneka Corporation and published in Biological and Pharmaceutical Bulletin in November 2004; it is confirmed that licorice flavonoids have hypoglycemic effects.
