How to Breast Self-Examination at Home?

Early diagnosis has great importance in all cancer types. Adult women from all ages need to breast self-examination at least once a month. In our pictorial manual breast examination article we have described the examination step by step. With this application you will have knowledge about your own breast structure and tissue and thus you can easily understand the changes. Breast examinations should be done by lying down, in shower and against a mirror.

Step 1 – Against the Mirror

1. Go against a mirror and take your bra. Be sure to clearly see all of your breast area in a well lit environment.

2. While your arms standing at your sides check your breasts by looking to them. Check whether there are any changes, abnormal swelling, and pits in the skin or changes in the shapes of the nipples in your breast contour.

3. Lift your arms over your head. Again check whether there are any changes, abnormal swelling, and pits in the skin or changes in the shapes of the nipples.

4. Lower your arms to your sides. Push your hips with your palms in order to relax your chest muscles. Check whether there are any changes, abnormal swelling, and pits in the skin or changes in the shapes of the nipples.

5. Tell any changes to your doctor and arrange an appointment.

Step 2 – In Shower

1. Lift your right arm over your head and examine your right breast with your left hand. Perform the examination with circular movements on your whole breast with your fingers. Do you feel any lumps, thickening or hardening?

Breast tissue extends from the armpit to nipple. Be sure to check your whole breast, sides of your breasts and armpits.

2. Lower your arm and repeat the same for your other breast. Check whether there are any lumps, thickening or hardening with circular movements.

3. If there is any change visit your doctor.

Step 3 – Lie Down

1. Lie down by putting a pillow or towel to under your right shoulder. Put your right arm under your head.

2. Gently feel all breast tissue with circular movements with your left hand. Also check the sides and armpits too. Check whether there are any lumps, thickening or hardening.

Apply low, medium and hard pressure.

3. Gently squeeze your right nipple with your left hand. Check whether is there any discharge or lump in your nipple.

4. Repeat the same for your left breast. Check whether there are any lumps, thickening or hardening with circular movements.

5. Contact with your doctor if there is any change.
